Eye Spy

Hey Sicklings,

I’m starting a new policy of erasing any comments that seem hateful toward another reader.  You can correct each other, argue about Rez lore, whatever, but anything that’s going to start a baseless fight will be deleted immediately.  I want everyone to feel comfortable coming to the site and I’d hate to lose any of you.  Most webcomic how-to’s  suggest you disable the comments section completely, but that’s not something we want to do.  What’s the purpose of stabbing the priestess in the gut and then kicking her off a ledge if we don’t get to hear the inevitable after-gasp?

There seems to be some concern in the comments section about the, ahem, worthlessness of non-Rez Sick material.  We’re still doing the comic three times a week, fear you not, but on top of that I’ll write one comic review, one children’s book review, and one piece of lore about our new universe.  We want to show you the kindling that keeps the Rez Sick fire crackling, and - more importantly - introduce you to vital work that’s happening in the comics and kid’s books world.  Enjoy or ignore as you please.

Here’s the kid’s book review for the week.

There’s a distant land where goblins drink rainbows through long, thin straws.  They hunt the colorful arcs over water-painted terrains and slurp them down, huing their frog-like skin ROYGBIV.  They are a menace to the skies and they must be stopped . . .

There is a cool way to teach morality.  The after-school specials of my youth took the direct approach: watch what happens when Jimmy rides his skateboard without a helmet, or, Jenny had a wonderful life . . . until she tried a cigarette.  These short, easily-digestible lessons told the world in black and white, striking fear into hearts and equating being judgemental with strength.  I spent a long time pointing fingers at kids who broke these sacred rules, thinking I was being a good person, and that there were only two ways of being: good or evil.

But over time, those shorts lost their grasp.  After a thousand rides down steep, curvaceous hills helmetless, skull in tact, or watching relatives burn a liftetime of cigarettes and outliving younger, tobaccoless relatives, those old shorts went up in smoke.

I much prefer morallity told through another universe.  It opens itself to a million interpretations.  Instead of pointing fingers, I become curious.  What do rainbows taste like?  Is it greedy to try one?  As I watch the goblins’ melted fate, I don’t search for goblins in my life, but rather the rainbows I’m trying to slurp up.  I think a perfect moraliy story will not make you point fingers at others, but find your weakness and pull it out through your belly button.

Granted, the goblins are the clear-cut bad guys of the story and they get their just desserts.  But to the book’s credit, it never comes right out and says so.  Am I the only one who mourns the loss of the pastel baldies and thinks the ostentatious flowers seem willfully obnoxious?  After all, those goblins were just as beautiful and colorful as the rainbows they drank . . .

Ow thats what I call painful volume… um, what comic is this?

  3. TheK3vin

“Quick sharpen my teeth with that rock!”

He reminds me ever so much of the black knight :P

  4. Mavellesta

Huh. So we have 3 adventures going on, it seems. 1. Willow and the maybe-dead-maybe-not Lenkins 2. Og, Bohard, and Haiz’s journey to Find Willow, and 3. Leporka (Thank you Vein) and the Prince. Confusing. I wonder how Mini will turn out…

  5. TK

Im glad to see that you guys arent sparing anyone a painful death in rez-sick. Mini died, pig-face died, lenkins is dying slowly and painfully. Although it takes a bit of getting used to when a character that has had an impact on the main character dies, i just hate it when everyone gets kept alive.

    Keep the funny flowing-TK

  6. (//.-)

Everything is dead-or near dead, which is so funny.

Seriously, remolay. I’m remembering my Japanese students dancing to “ABC” by the Jackson 5 and requesting it over and over and over . . . My childhood kinda aches today.

I didn’t really care for his music too much. I’m more of a rock fan. But on the other hand of it all, I did see a park FULL of children today on my way to lunch soooooo…
