Time of Death
You Should Know Better
Reading Comics Into Adulthood
Most of us are not so daring that we would wear a mask and cape in public, even if we were secretly sworn to defend earth from an alien invasion from a post on an uncle’s humble farm.
One of my favorite tricks in stories these days is to blur the line between fantasy and reality. Instead of the punishable-by-death “it was all just a dream” sequence, smart artists let worlds bleed into each other. Scott Pilgrim does this wonderfully, Terry Gilliam is an old master, Synecdoche, New York does it so well it starts to bleed out of the screen and into your real life.
Lemire’s characters feel drawn with a furious hand, lending legitimacy to the brutal undercurrent. After this and the last post on OZ, I’ve decided that clean lines are for suckers. Mark decided this too. You may notice a change in the most recent Incomplete comic. Clean lines are something for Hollywood, coupled with plastic, smoothed emotions. A mom gone from cancer, a fallen hockey hero: these are the elements for the rocky transition from adolescence into adulthood, and should be scribbled accordingly.
There is also, of course, the ever present guilt of liking things that you should have grown out of a long time ago, you know, the theme of this entire blog. Who among us wouldn’t wear a cape?
Recommended to: people on farms, hockey buffs, anyone who has pretended to fly

It took some flipping back and forth, but I can see the change in The Incompletes comic now. I dig the new style - what kid (especially with a mop like Christian’s) doesn’t have a mess of fly-aways? I’m absolute rubbish in the visual arts, but it seems more organic some how - captures the bloody knees and dirty fingernails of childhood summers that end too quickly. Nice work.
Growing up is overrated. Keep the cape, guys.
