Reading Comics into Adulthood
With images like these, I don’t need to write much. Mark found this little gem hiding amongst the other, less-marvelous Marvel titles. He’s ecstatic about the erratic sketching of Skottie Young, an artist who allows his lines to stay dirty, ignoring all calls for sleek jaws and curvaceous biceps. The new Wizard of Oz is dangerous. One glance whisks you away to a dreamy state faster than a poppy field.
As if the artwork weren’t enough, the author has stuck to the original plot of WoO, including the hat that summons winged-monkeys, the mouse-queen’s whistle, the green goggles that lets Dorothy see the Emerald City, and all the other elements missing from the glossy 1939 film adaptation. Not to mention the brutality: the tin man slowly hacking away all his body parts and replacing them with tin pieces. I hate to say it like this, but Marvel’s adaptation really does capture the brains, heart, and courage missing from the comic shelf.
